questions about roleplaying

Postby ariel » Thu Sep 01, 2005 9:42 am

I have a couple of questions.
is roleplaying just staying in char?
(not too much ooc)
do specific class things?
(praying and ask blessing from the gods)

the way you interact with players?
(making arguments with kampfer for only killing vicars and acolyte's)
(heal players in battle)
do other players have to notice it?
(broadcast im gonna make kampfer pay for all his deeds angainst the clerics)
and how do you roleplay when walking the lands when no one else is on. are you gonna talk to yourself or against mobs?

please let me know so that i can improve my play.

best regards

ariel

Pretty much that... but you shouldn't stick too much to a certain set of guidelines.

You play a character, who has a character. Be that person - whenever, whereever, whatever. There are no specific things you should or should not do, other than what your character's personality dictates. Forget the real world around you... think the way your character would. Like I said, do not play your character, be him/her!

From the helpfile called Roleplay (really? they have one? Yes.)

here it is, for the ones who are too lazy to check it while playing ^^

-----~~~~~ Roleplaying in the Lands of Stone ~~~~~-----

This document has been reviewed and then revised in accordance with the
feedback we have received to date. More is welcome (See bottom of doc)

The Lands of Stone is a MUD game where there is a growing emphasis on
role-play. We encourage players to participate in and instigate role-
play situations and believe that role-play enhances the gaming
experience for thos who would walk in this world.

A system is in place to manage RP awards and involves both automatic
processes and DM involvement. Due to the very subjective nature of a
roleplay system the majority of tallying will be manual and that means
admin will need to be watching your efforts. Please be aware that we
are not multilingual and only role-play in english will count.

Why role-play? Read that first paragraph again, we really do believe it.
Work has already been completed which means that there is an enhanced potential for creatures and features to react with or to your acquired roleplay status. Future developments may have a roleplay component which means things may happen subtly differently depending on your status. How this will proceed and where it will lead is still largely
unknown, what we believe is that it will enrich your experience in the
Lands.

Your roleplay status will be somewhat of a mystery to you. Over time it
will move up and down and at some point if you have enough banked points
in role play then your title will be adjusted. The better and more
consistent your roleplay, the better the adjective becomes. This can
also happen in reverse. The less that roleplay is applied, or in some
cases where it is *very* badly applied then the lower the rating and
the worse the adjective becomes.

Role-Play is a very subjective thing, you create your char and then
imbue it with a personality. The personality needs to be believable,
and to be this it needs to be consistent, its not quite as easy as
it sounds. All this and you are roleplaying to your yourself. When
you interact with the other players on the game then the role-play
starts to become noticable. The staff are much more likely to spot
role-play in a group than by solo players.

Even if you manage to role-play consistently and well, there is still
no guarantee that you will be rewarded for your work, sad, but true.
We have to see it to award it, and remember what we said about it
being subjective? its all true though we will always try to be
impartial. If we think the role-play is good, and have enjoyed
watching it and the mother-in-law has not nagged recently then its
quite possible an award is made. Remember consistent play means we
get a clearer image of your character and good role-play within that
image will tend to stand out.

Roleplay is also at the individual character level. We have seen
instances where all of a person's characters are identical in
behaviour. In fact actions taken with one character have been
followed on by another character as if they were only one individual.
This is patently wrong. Please keep your characters separate and
allow for others to do the same.

The awards are what we want them to be. The default is a grant of
experience and/or gold, but there are other options open to us. We
can create custom items (help customs) but these are normally linked
to some specific event or action sequence. We can award special titles, sometimes unique ones. It depends on the situation and if
we think the actions justify such an award. To help you get a better
idea go to http:homepage.ntlworld.com/purple.meanie/ This is where
the stories recorded by Erynn the Bard are kept. We read them and
enjoy them too. It helps us envisage your characters and gives us
a measure for your role-play. You do not need to put anything there
but it does help, otherwise it takes us longer to assess your efforts.

Feedback is needed too, do you agree with the principles or not. Why do
you take the stance you have, this is information which will guide us
in the development of this system and your say will count. Use
shihan@ntlworld.com as the place to send emails. They will be read but
not necessarily replied to. Please put roleplay in the subject so that
the mails can be easily extracted.

Although erynn's site (the link) should be updated (*wink*), this should be enough. Otherwise you could google for roleplay mud guides or just ask the liaison/dm or other players who seem to RP good (with proficient/skillfull title) for hints/advice. Also writing stories is helping. Hmm, which reminds me, i have to write some about soloing Galvaug.

Hmm, sleep...
