Mages Skill

Postby Scorpion » Mon Oct 11, 2004 4:30 pm

One of the important and annoying things for mages is MP. HP you can heal with potions which are easy to get. For MP there are also potions, but very very very hard to get.
So, since mages have to wait like 90% of their play time for MP to recharge, i suggest a skill for mages that they get MP. This could be done by transferring hp to mp every x min. Or just a recharge skill every x min.

Good idea. Could be the same as the hp/mp song that bards have.

well.. I will put that here because I don,t want to start a new topic..

its in relation with mages... maybe more spells effect.

mages could have the same as barbarian/Dk berserking skill.. but its could be called enhance magic or stuff like that.. (even DK could do that while berserk) the berserk skill is to raise the strength of yourself by releasing all the anger.. hatred.. pulsion you have inside.. why couldn't be the same for spell.. the energy pass through your body to cast a fireball.. so while a mage enhanced skill take effect the energy emaning from his body could boost the spell for a while.. naturally it could be apply only on offensive spell and maybe if you use that enhancement you can only cast offensive spell until the timer end.

The problem with allowing mages a skill to recharge mp is that they could use it to make two runs on higher level monsters in quick succession. Basically anything that allows mages to recover mp faster will alter the balance of the game back in their direction, more like things stood before bind was made weaker.

The alternative skill to tranfer hp to mp was one I suggested a while ago, and as Rygar (I think) pointed out, it would need to be very carefully balanced to stop magic users gaining enough magic to then heal all the damage with mp left over. Actually Kampfer's idea about berserk mages only being able to cast offensive spells might overcome this problem. There is an in-game example of a mage overdoing things and being sucked dry by his spell... so maybe it 'fits' with the game's atmosphere.

But if Rygar vigs the mage there is an invincible team...

another possibility, no person can cast a healing spell on a mage in "berserk" mode either

But now you're talking about a skill you can constantly use. Just make it time limited skill, like the hp/mp recover song that bards have.

Mmm, but no mage is just going to wait ten minutes and tackle the big things when their skill is ready again, are they?

No wait...

Who was talking about a full mp recharge?? Why not just a recovery of only 10 mp. That would make it more interesting and you can only do one little spell with that.

If a mage has say 60 mp, but every ten minutes they can access 70 mp with a recharge from their skill, then every ten minutes they fight as if they're one or two levels higher. Or if they make make a run on a creature and tick half a minute quicker, getting back to their target before it has recovered as much as it otherwise would. It wouldn't have to be a full recharge to alter their strength, jeez, a FULL recharge every 10 minutes would be grotesque! It definitely makes mages stronger, as it brings more targets into the range which they can overcome. I have every sympathy with mages suffering from the boredom of ticking, especially those who haven't maximised piety - could I recommend a good book?

Well, it's only an idea to make mage tick a little bit less indeed. Like barbarians they have to tick ages, but unlike barbarians, mages cant easily access mp recover potions as barbs can get hp recover stuff. Of course you can do other stuff, but hey, im playing a game, im not doing something else.

Ok, we've a number of ideas to make "ticking less dull", but it would not be done in a way that'd make a character more powerful.

*ANYTHING* that involved giving a character a boost of MP would considerably boost how powerful they were, and so is not something we're likely to consider at all. A boost of HP in a fight just gives you the chance to survive being hit an extra time, you still might miss, wheras a boost of MP doesn't hold the same risk, certainly not for a powerful mage who very very rarely fails anything but the most powerful of spells. It'd be guaranteed extra damage.

Mages can easily be played in a style that ensures your HP never go down, and they can easily be vigged, and as such we'd not consider allowing them to transfer HP to MP either, as Jagg again remembered us dismissing previously.

If you're playing a blast-rest-blast-rest-blast-ad infinitum style then that's your choice, but believe it or not it's not the only way to play a mage and if it bores you then play a more entertaining character/class.

If we ever put skills in to LoS that allow characters increases in power they will have considerable negative side effects...

We appreciate that ticking is dull, but if we allowed characters to blast everything in sight without having to take any breaks, it wouldn't be worth playing for anybody else, ticking is actually an important factor in preventing magic users from completely dominating LoS. Mages are still powerful, even after our recent changes, and if we were to consider putting in a tick-faster system it would have to be done in a way which'd NOT allow you to abuse this to do multiple "runs" on a creature and wouldn't allow you to blast without respite.

It's much more probable we'll just add things to do whilst you're "resting".

 Having just read Jagg's latest story, I have come up with a brilliant solution. Jagg could sit himself permanantly in a tick room of his choice and leave his fast finkin' helm turned upwards in the centre of the room. Mages and other casters could sit and listen to his stories while they tick and throw some gold in the helm before they leave. If all his stories are as good as the one I just read, in no time at all, he will have sufficient funds to purchase (from the GODS - coz he is actually helping them out) a new weaponmaster's sword to replace the one he accidently sold
